Automobile Statistics

Automotive buffs love talking about and showing off their vehicles. Here are some interesting facts, using data from the latest sources of record, that may keep the conversation around the garage revved up and lively. Sales statistics reflect new vehicle sales only; leases on new vehicles and the sale of used vehicles are not included.

Number of vehicles on the road in the United States - 247,421,120 registered vehicles as of 2005.

Number of vehicles on the road in Europe - more than 250 million in 2007.

Number of vehicles on the road in Asia - Asia’s diverse population and remote locations make vehicle registration difficult to count, as do the records of the various nations of the continent. New car sales in Asia are projected to be in excess of 18 million for 2010 but many automobiles on Asian roads are 20 or 30 years old or more.

Number of vehicles currently on the road worldwide - more than 600 million registered passenger vehicles, as of 2005.

Number of vehicles produced in the United States each year - 11,263,986 as of 2006.

Number of vehicles produced in Europe each year - 16,171,000 in 2006.

Number of vehicles produced in Asia each year - 22,162,00 in 2006.

Number of vehicles produced each year worldwide - the projected number for 2009 is 51,971,328.

Number of all time vehicles produced in the world - This number is impossible to determine. Automotive vehicles as we know them today have been in production for more than 100 years; accurate records, if kept, have never been assembled and compiled into one concise number. Adding to the problem of diversity is disclosure; not every nation chooses to disclose manufacturing and production statistics with the rest of the world, especially during times of hostile relations or political unrest. The first automobile in history is said to have been a steam-powered vehicle built by a Jesuit missionary in 1672 for the Chinese Emperor’s amusement. The industry has skyrocketed since then.

The number of alcohol related auto fatalities in the world - Different countries report and classify traffic fatalities differently, especially where alcohol is involved, so a firm number of alcohol related auto fatalities on a global basis is difficult to determine. WHO studies suggest a low of as many as 20% of all traffic fatalities in affluent nations involve alcohol to as high as 69% in nations that experience long-term economic turmoil and instability.
